This one-day course is designed to show practical uses of marine Radar for Piloting, Chart Navigation, and Collision Avoidance. Both professional captains and recreational boaters will gain knowledge in practical radar techniques using simple procedures. Students will receive an instructor-led classroom presentation, and work in 2 or 3-person teams during the radar simulator practical exercises.

Topics will include:

  • Radar Fundamentals – Theory and Tuning (video)
  • Radar Piloting – Hazard Avoidance, Buoy Lines, Channels, Coastlines
  • Radar Fixes – Multiple Ranges, Single Target Fix
  • Determining Risk of Collision
  • Determining Closest Point of Approach (CPA)
  • Mini- Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (MARPA) (video)

Get the most out of your Marine Radar with these simple techniques and procedures. Be able to comply with the Navigation Rules of the Road by using radar for ”long-range scanning to obtain early warning of risk of collision and radar plotting or equivalent systematic observation of detected targets”. Course cost includes student guide, textbook – Radar for Mariners with interactive Radar simulator, continental breakfast.
