Secretary
Captain Bob Thomson
USCG 100-ton Master
I grew up sailing on family boats on Long Island’s Great South Bay in New York, cruising the south shore bays to Block Island Sound and southern New England ports. In those early years, I was also active in one-design racing, worked as a keelboat sailing instructor, and made my first ocean passages.
I went on to a career in the U.S. Coast Guard. Assignments included serving as a deck watch officer at sea, directing search and rescue missions, managing aids to navigation systems, and supporting boating safety programs. Serving at various duty stations along the way, I sailed on waters ranging from Alaska to the Caribbean.
Now retired from my post-military career as a nonprofit administrator, I enjoy cruising the Chesapeake on my Ericson 28, sailing out of Galesville on the West River. I’m preparing to launch Chesapeake Horizons Sailing in the 2025 boating season to share my passion for sailing and safety on the water.
I hold a Coast Guard 100-ton master license and instructor certifications from the American Sailing Association (ASA) and the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC).
