Speaker: J. Seamus Duffy, Annapolis Compass - Take the Voodoo Out of Compass Headings

J. Seamus Duffy

Dinner meeting with guest speaker J. Seamus Duffy of Annapolis Compass

The magnetic compass has been in use for 2200 years. With the more recent introduction and integration of electronic navigation, many mariners have neglected the fundamental operations of their magnetic compass. In this program, we will take a look at the compass from its origin to its place in modern day operations of marine vessels. Some of the questions that will be answered include:

  • What should captains know about compass accuracy?
  • How does one swing a compass, and how long does it take to properly adjust a ship's compass?
  • Can I adjust my ship's compass myself? How do I know when it's time to call in a professional?
  • Why does my ship's compass often disagree (but not always) with my autopilot compass?
  • With GPS and computer navigation, why is it important to have an accurate ship's compass?
  • What do international and US regulations say about compass accuracy for commercial and recreational vessels?
  • What checklist items should a delivery captain include about compass accuracy before getting underway?
  • Can the ship's compass be corrected, or a deviation card be created, while the boat is at the dock?

J. Seamus Duffy describes himself as a “son of a sailor” and the “son of a compass adjuster.” He has over twenty years of experience working in the family business, Joseph L Duffy & Son, learning from his father and gaining special insights into the use, performance, and practical problems associated with all types of magnetic compasses. For over 30 years, this family-run business based in Annapolis MD has offered professional compass adjusting services in the Eastern-Atlantic for recreational, commercial, and military vessels. Their staff members have adjusted every type of vessel imaginable from top-secret military ships to trailer-able boats.

Seamus Duffy and the staff of Annapolis Compass (https://annapoliscompass.com/) continue to repair, adjust, and swing compasses as well as provide deviation tables to assist captains in accurately navigating the seas.
